About The GIST (Techstars Comcast '19)
The GIST creates sports content, experiences and community that are by women and for women. Our mission is to connect and empower women through sports. Our vision is to be the go-to source for sports for women. Right now, The GIST uses an email newsletter, social media, a chatbot and a website to give our community of ‘GISTers’ (what we call our users) ‘the gist’ of what’s happening in the sports world in a really fun, relatable and accessible way, while providing a female voice and perspective in a predominantly male-dominated industry. We are a fast-growing media and technology startup that is quickly expanding its impact both geographically and by content channels.
We started The GIST because as both casual and avid female fans, we often felt like we were left out of the sports conversation and community. The current sports media outlets made us feel like sports were only for an avid male sports fan. We wanted to change that because we think sports are, and should be, for everyone.
This problem stems from a major lack of diversity in the sports industry — only 14% of sports journalists are females, only 4% of sports media coverage is on female athletes, female athletes receive only 0.4% of endorsement money and less than 5% of c-suite executives in sport are women. So it’s really no wonder why sometimes sports can feel like a guys thing. The GIST exists to change these stats.
